About

A stretch of dark-sand coast and lava reefs where the whole of the south comes to surf. La Izquierda (Spanish Left) is a famous left-hander breaking over a lava shelf – for experienced surfers only, as the bottom is sharp. Beginners and surf schools head to El Conquistador, where the reef is covered with sand and pebbles. At sunset there's a lovely view of La Gomera from here.

Our tip

Wear neoprene boots on the reef breaks, and book your beginner lesson for low tide – the schools schedule them accordingly.
