Itineraries

When it's cloudy / windy

Plan B for when the weather won't play ball: where to go – the south, above the clouds or under a roof

4 days 11 stops all guests; pick whichever fits the weather on the day

Day 1

Cloudy in the north? Stay south or head west

  1. 1

    all day

Playa de Las Vistas and Los Cristianos

When the trade winds pile clouds up over the north (especially May–September), the south is usually sunny. Try the beaches at Fañabé, El Duque and La Pinta.

  2. 2

    afternoon

    Playa de San Juan

The west coast is the most sheltered spot when the wind blows from the north-east.

Our tip

Check the webcams and a satellite map (e.g. AEMET). If Puerto de la Cruz is grey, postpone your trip north.

Day 2

Clouds in the south too? Go above them – up Teide

  1. 1

    morning

Teide driving loop (Chío – Las Cañadas – Vilaflor)

The inversion layer of cloud usually sits at 600–1,500 m. Above Vilaflor you'll emerge into sunshine and see a sea of clouds beneath you.

  2. 2

    11:00–14:00

Teide cable car (Teleférico del Teide)

Check the cable car in the morning – it doesn't run in strong winds. Roques de García and the viewpoints are always accessible when the road is open.

Our tip

If strong winds are blowing on Teide as well, the cable car stops. In that case, simply drive through the park and stop at the viewpoints. In winter, snow can close the roads (tenerifeon.es/alertas).

Day 3

Rain or strong wind – an indoor plan

  1. 1

    morning

    Loro Parque

Much of the park is under cover (penguins, aquarium, shows).

  2. 2

    afternoon

Cueva del Viento – lava tube

The largest lava tube in Europe, a constant 14 °C inside. Visits by reservation only, children aged 5 and over.

  3. 3

    evening

    Siam Mall

Shopping, a cinema and restaurants under one roof, close to Ponderosa.

Our tip

When there's a coastal warning (“aviso por fenómenos costeros”), stay off the rocks, piers and natural pools – not even for a photo.

Day 4

Calima or a grey day – culture, wine and museums

  1. 1

    10:00–12:00

MUNA – Museo de Naturaleza y Arqueología (Santa Cruz)

Guanche mummies, volcanoes and the natural world of the Canaries.

  2. 2

    12:15–13:15

TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (Santa Cruz)

Modern art in a building by Herzog & de Meuron.

  3. 3

    14:30–16:00

Museo de la Ciencia y el Cosmos (La Laguna)

An interactive museum of science and space – great for children.

  4. 4

    16:30–18:00

    Bodegas Monje

A wine museum with tastings of local grape varieties and ocean views.

Our tip

Check museum opening hours the day before – many are closed on Mondays. During calima (Saharan dust), keep outdoor exertion to a minimum, especially with children or if you have asthma.
