About

The finest day trip by car from the south: up through Chío on the TF-38, past black lava fields, across the Las Cañadas caldera to the cable car base station, then back down the TF-21 through pine forest via Vilaflor. Worth stopping along the way: the Narices del Teide viewpoint (lava flows from the 1798 eruption), Roques de García and Llano de Ucanca. This exact route – Ponderosa → cable car → Vilaflor → Ponderosa – is the one the owner recommends.

Our tip

Fill up before you go – the last petrol station before the park is in Vilaflor – and bring a jacket: it's often 15 °C cooler up there than by the sea. From June 2026 smoking, including e-cigarettes, is banned throughout the park, and the Cabildo is planning access controls and pre-booked parking for non-residents, so check the latest situation before you set off.
