About
One of the island's best-preserved historic towns. In the 16th and 17th centuries this was Tenerife's main port, until lava from the Trevejo volcano buried it in 1706 – the same solidified lava that formed today's El Caletón natural pools. Stroll the cobbled lanes to the Plaza de la Libertad with the former Convent of San Francisco, and down to the Castillo de San Miguel fortress by the sea.
Our tip
The owner's link takes you to the El Caletón pools – cool off there after exploring the town (swimming is banned when the waves are high). The historic centre is pedestrianised, so leave the car on the outskirts.
„A lovely old town, too"
