About

The most important pilgrimage site in the Canary Islands: a basilica from 1959 housing the statue of the Virgin of Candelaria, patron saint of the archipelago. On the seafront square stand nine bronze statues of the menceyes – the Guanche kings who ruled Tenerife before the Spanish arrived. Pilgrims come in the greatest numbers on 14 and 15 August.

Our tip

It's just a few minutes off the TF-1 motorway, so it's easy to combine with the Pirámides de Güímar (10 minutes away). Dress appropriately when entering the basilica – it's a working church.
